Another slam to the bleak economic outlook is the news that Sun Microsystems of Silicon Valley, CA, will be trimming up to 6,000 positions from it’s work force (approximately 18%).
Drops in stock value on Wall Street by high-tech companies have prompted the action which is believed to eliminate up to $6 million in costs for a total of over $2 billion from efforts over the last seven years. Open-source software and other stategies have failed to yield profits.
News of the cuts drove up stock value around 5%, yet shares remain at only 20% of the 12 month high as of Friday, November 14, 2008.
Also, Rich Green, head of the software division has left as part of the reorganization efforts.
